JOHN HINKS RESEARCH

For the leader of the 21st century firm, innovation is increasingly about how effectively they can assimilate the new models of work and apply these to transform how their operational models are managed. Agility and adaptiveness are today's differentiators of competitiveness, but the evidence suggests that in terms of management and application of innovation the UK trails the pack.

For many, innovating the organisation and the management culture involves tackling fear of uncertainty. Today’s transformational leaders are those who grasp this uncertainty and nurture deep trust across their teams, empowering and enabling managers to radically innovate their ways of thinking and working.

Because innovation is a choice everyone makes on a daily basis; because team culture determines whether innovations live or die; and because those who helped create today’s ways of working often stand in the way of transforming it for tomorrow’s needs, nurturing a culture of innovativeness and setting a strategy for innovation are ‘wicked’ problems for leaders.

If you recognise yourself and your challenge here, and if you are ready to lead a truly innovative culture, including empowering your managers to trigger the profound, transformative changes your organisation needs, then talk with me. I can provide 1:1 mentoring, exec team coaching, plus horizon scanning, help with designing strategic innovation portfolios, plus support and troubleshooting for leaders pursuing culture change.

I have deep experience of nurturing innovator networks, of tackling innovation-inertia, of applying cutting-edge real-world research to transform support service models and of leading to embed change.

Personalised Innovation Mentoring

A personalised consultation designed to help you clarify how your preferred innovation style shapes your response to innovation opportunities, and how to improve this. The consultation opens with an orientation discussion around your current innovation challenges, which is usually followed by a reflexive exercise. Based upon these, we will agree the key themes to explore in depth.

All mentoring is 1:1, confidential, personalised, and delivered at-distance by phone or skype as you prefer.

Leading for Innovativeness

A programme of online mentoring consultations designed to help you as team leader or manager understand what is involved in advancing the innovativeness of your team culture.

The mentoring conversations usually start with four principal themes – 1) understanding how your leadership style and the culture of your firm shape the innovation landscape as seen by your managers and their teams; 2) identifying why your individual managers and team members differ in their engagement with and perception of innovation, their role in it, and what ‘good’ looks like. Also, how this shapes the prospects for the team’s overall innovation appetite and style; 3) the role, scope and limits of the leader and manager in creating and nurturing a shared team vision about innovation, especially translating this into usable innovative capacity; and 4) understanding your wider role as leader in nurturing innovativeness in a C21st team.

Our closing mentoring conversation will usually focus on how to help innovativeness mature into a valued trait within teams, including how to engage your managers and people to operate as networks that are greater than the sum of their parts. We will look at issues such as designing personal development initiatives around diversity and differing innovation styles of managers and team members; how to maintain momentum through changes in team context; and recognising the footfalls and common forms of manager push-back.

In preparation for the suite of conversations we will have an orientation call, plus I will usually recommend some preparatory reading or exercises. Between the sessions I will suggest further tailored reading or exercises to help you assimilate the issues.
